inhighschool years, when Iexcelled myfellow classmatesin physicsandgeometry. This notonly firedoff my interest instructural designbut alsohelpedto laysolid groundworkfor myundergraduate studies in civilengineering, which heavilyinvolved mechanicsin physicsand solidgeometry. With excellentscores in the compulsorynational universityentranceexamination,I wonacceptance in1991into the Beijing Polytech University, one ofChinas top10engineering schools, particularly well-known for itsstructural engineering. For fiveyears atthis university,I receivedstrict andthoroughtraining in areas suchas buildingstructures, building materials.Soil mechanicsand foundation, concrete andmasonry structures, construction, steel structureand earthquakeresistant structure.I alsotookevery opportunity to participatein co-po workand projectscommissionedby constructionand designcompanies.Opportunities aboundfor civilengineers andcivil engineeringstudents inChina, which nowhouses theworlds fastestgrowing majoreconomy.Atevery yearsjob fairheld on the campusof thePolytechUniversity,morethan200positions competefor60-odd graduatingstudents.Under suchcircumstances, undergraduate studentsin theirfifth yearare alsoin highdemandfor internshipat variousconstruction companiesand designinstitutes.Virtually everystudent getsa fullworkload immediatelyuponstarting theinternship andassumes considerableresponsibilities soonafterwards.I becamethe luckiestamong thelucky bywinning arare opportunityforany civilengineer:to participatein the design of the BeijingWesternRailway Station, the largesturban structurein Chinaup todate.Thishappened whileI interned, along withfive otherschoolmates,at the BeijingArchitectural Institute. This institutehas designedvirtually allthe modernlandmarkbuildings in China, including thefamous GreatHall of the Peopleand the Museumof RevolutionaryHistory onthe TiananmenSquare, theBeijing RailwayStation andthe AsianGames Village. It wasonthestrengthof myacademic meritsthat Igot toenjoy theseopportunities. The Westernstation projectin Beijingconsisted ofthe mailhall70,000square meters, south wingbuilding group40,000square metersandnorth wingbuilding group35,000square meters. My taskwas toassist inthedesign of a shoppingcentre in the southwing whichhad16,000squaremeters.I independentlyaccomplished aquarter ofthedesignfor thewholebuilding, mainly responsiblefor thefoundation design, calculation anddrawingof steeldistribution ofbeam, floor;columns andconcrete piles.Icherished thisopportunitytoapply theknowledge I had learnedin theclassroomto thereal worldproblems andI workedwith myutmostdedication.I,however, soon foundout that, even inthis monumentalproject, designtechniques appliedin manycases leftmuch tobe desired. When treatingthewind load, the earthquakeforce andthe effectof frozensoil, historicaldata andintelligent estimateswere usedin placeof accuratemeasuring. This phenomenonmade medetermined toimprove myknowledge andskillsin agraduate programthat canteach sophisticatedknow-how,suchas yours. It regrettablyturned outthat thedesign ofthe mailhall wasseriouslyflawed, which drewintense mediaattention nationwide. The structuresanktwo metersafter completion. As expertscontinue tohelp thecourtdetermine whois responsible,I myselfhave beenawed bythis dramaandkept researchingit eversince itbecame known. My tentativeexplanation, submitted totake intoaccount theundergroundwaters powerof buoyancy, even thoughthe structurebasewas putbelow thewaterbed. The structurefloated untilenough loadwasmounted. The properconstruction methodtherefore shouldhave involvedartificialprecipitation untilthe completionof structure.Upon graduationin1996,I joinedtheBeijingBiggest Co.,one ofthe fourlargestconstruction companiesinChina, and immediatelytook onmanagementduties asan assistantmanger atthe construction site.I havesupervisedsteel engineering, concrete engineeringand platformengineeringfor theretwenty-three storybuildings in theBeijingDDresidential area,a totalof60,000square metersin apartments. In thiscapacity,I wascompelled tolearn managementskills whichhad neverbeentaught inthe classroom.Although constructionmanagement isnot whatIforesee tobe alifetime pursuit,I executedmy dutymeticulously andcreatively.I becamethe firstconstructionsitemanager inthe companytoconduct experimentscomparing box-weir maintenanceandthetraditionalmanual wateringmethod.By usingbox-weir method, weak concreteandcracks inthe concretewere eliminated.Through theseimportant, albeitsmall, steps ofimprovement,I havederived immensesatisfaction. My vigorousacademic trainingand exposureto intricatedesignproblems andcomplex constructionmanagement issueshas stoodme ingoodstead professionallycompared to my peers. My planto furthermycareer throughadvanced studiesstems fromself-confidence in myacademic calibreand also a strongdesire tosolve designand constructionproblemsencountered atwork.I haveresearched
