Have along conversationwith thephonesoff and theheartson. One day, when I was afreshman inhigh school,I sawKyle frommy classwalking homefromschool. He was16with massesof books.I thoughtto myself,“Why wouldanyone bringhome allhisbooks ona FridayNerd!〃I hadquite aweekend planned,so I17my shouldersand went on.As I was walking,a bunch of kidsbumped into him purposelyand18him.His glasseswentflying. He lookedup and I sawterrible19in hiseyes.Out ofsympathy Ijogged overtohimandas he20looking forhis glasses, tears welledup.Handing himhis glasses,I said,“Those guysare jerks.〃He lookedat meand said,z,Hey,thanks!”There was a bigsmile on his face.It was one ofthose smilesthat showedreal21,We talkedall the way home, delighted. He even22my invitationto playfootball occasionally.Over the next fouryears,Kyle and1became closefriends. When we were seniors,he becamethe23in theclass and was24to givea speechat thegraduation ceremony.I25him all the timeabout being anerd withno malice.Kyle wasvaledictorian(荣誉致辞生)of ourclass,so hehad to preparethe speechforgraduation. On graduationday,as he started his speech,he26his throat, and began.“Graduation isa time to thankthose whohelped youmake itthrough those27years.Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe acoach…,but mostlyyour friends.I amhere to tell youthat beingafriend tosomeoneisthe best giftyoucan givehim orhere.1just28at myfriend with disbelief ashe toldthe storyof the first daywe met.Kylehad planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker(寄存柜),29,his Momwouldn,t have to doit laterandwascarrying hisstuff home.30I wassaved. My friendsaved mefrom doingthe unspeakable.I heardthe gaspgo throughthe crowdasthis boytold us all about his31moment.When hiseyes32mine,I was able toseetears shimmering in his smiling eyes.I smiledback intears.Kyle finishedhisspeechand walkedtowards me.With nomore words,he gavemeafirm hug.Not untilthat momentdid Irealize whata bigdifference onesmall33had madeto myfriend Kyle. Not untilthat momentdid Irealize itsdepth.It34me thatnever shouldwe can changea persons life. For betteror for worse. No actof kindness, howeverwe underestimate the power of ourrandom actof kindness. With onesmall gesture,B.discriminating C.associating D.
