IELTS WritingSuggestedwriting procedures and skills:
1.Analyze the taskThis mustbe donequickly butcarefully.You mustread theinstructions properly.The firstacademic writingtask inIELTS is a description;you willtherefore be askedto describesomething.Analyze the task tofind the topic orgeneral theme.Forexample,in thefollowing task:Describe howsolar radiationcan beutilized toprovidedomestic hotand lightingthetopicis solarradiation.The nextstep isto decideon theactual questionyou are being asked.In theexampleabove,the questionis:How canit providedomestic hot water and lightingThequestion iswhat you arebeingasked towrite about.You mustalso analyzethe taskto decidewhat particulartask typeit is,as thiswillaffect howyou organizeyour writing.This isdiscussed below.Do nospend morethan oneminute on this.Task1isadescription.There arethree types.You may beaskedto describe aprocess,an objectof aset ofdata whichmaybea graph,a chartor aset offiguresin atable.Process:With a process you must describehow somethingworks orhow it ismade orused.The exampleon solarradiation asksyou todescribeaprocess howitis usedto providehotwaterandlighting.For thisyou mustfocus onthe stagesinthe process.Object:With anabject orset ofobjects you must describewhat somethingis orwhatis does.For thisyou mustfocus onthe relationshipbetween parts.Data:With data you mustdescribe changes,differences ortrends.Focus onwhat these areand why.
2.Write shortnotesOnce you have analyzedthetaskand knowwhat you need to do,the nextstep istowrite notes.This isan essentialpart of organizing your writing andyou shouldspendup tofive minutesonthis.Choose relevantmaterial that you need to completethedescription.What youchoose mustbe relevantto thequestion.
3.Arrange your notes underheadings andorder themNumberyour motesor markthem insome wayto groupthem undermain heading.This meansputting yourmaterial intoa logicalorder.How youdo thiswill dependonthetasktype.For example,in thecase ofaprocessthe logicalorder isto startatthe beginningand followthe stagesof theprocess throughto theend.In thecase ofanobject it is bestto startwith ageneraldescription andthen focuson specificfeatures.With aset ofdatayouwouldgenerally describethe overalltrend andthen lookat specificfeatures.However youchooseto doit,itis important toget your ideas organized.Otherwise you will notbeable towrite clearly.Good writingis clearlyorganized.There aremany waysin whichyou show howyou haveorganized your ideas.•Divide youranswer intoparagraphs,with oneparagraph foreach of themain headingsin yournotes.•Within eachparagraph,write clearsentences,with onesentence foreachitem onyournotes.•Use linkingwords andexpressions toshowhowyou areorganizing yourideas:show theorder ofevents withtime expressionsfirst,next,etc.andthe relationshipbetween partswith comparativesand superlativesthe largersection,the most important bit,etc.and withprepositional phrasesnext to,linking these…etc..•For bothtasks itisimportantto begin and endclearly as well asgiving clearexamplesto supportyourideasfor tasktwo,or to give relevantfigures fortaskone.•Punctuation isanother wayoforganizingyour writingclearly.
