1.1million and900,000years ago.The Taklimakan Desert isthe largestdesert inChina andthe second-largest mobiledesertin theworld.Prior to this discovery,the timingof the formation ofmajor deserts inChina andCentral Asia remained unclearin academiccircles,according toWang Xin,aprofessor from the Collegeof Earthand EnvironmentalSciences atLanzhou University,Thesefindings highlightsignificant variationsin thetiming andprocesses of desert formation acrossmid-latitude Asia,he said.Apart fromarid climate conditions,differences inmaterial supplycapacitycaused byregional tectonicsand geomorphologicalconditions mayplay acrucialrole in the formation of the deserts andrequire furtherresearch,he added.The researchteam,led byWang andChen Fahu,an academicianfrom theInstitute ofTibetanPlateau Researchat theChinese Academyof Sciences,analyzed a200-meter drillcoreextracted fromthe centerof the desert,as partof alarger1,340-meter coresample.Wang explainedthat thecontinuous accumulationof aeoliansand andthe absenceoffluvial andlacustrine sedimentsindicate thatrivers andlakes havenot reachedthe coreof thedesert,even duringwarmer andwetter periodsover thepast300,000years.Since itsinitiation in2008,the WesternEnvironmental DrillingProject hasconductedscientific drillingin theinteriors ofmajor desertssuch asthe TaklimakanDesert,Badain JaranDesert,Tengger Desert and GurbantunggutDesert.Unraveling the history of the desert and its climate impacts will provide insights intohowdesert systemsmay respond to futureclimate changes,Wang said,noting that the teamwillcontinue studyingthe drillcores togain furtherinsights into theformationand evolution
