0.box at the endoftheday, and thatwas mainlybecause mymother hasnever believedinemail,in Facebook,in textingor cellphones ingeneral.Andso whileother kidswere BBM-ing theirparents,I wasliterallywaiting by the mailboxto geta letterfrom hometosee howthe weekendhad gone, which was a littlefrustratingwhen Grandmawas in the hospital, but Iwas justlookingfor somesort ofscribble, some unkemptcursive frommymother. And sowhen Imoved toNew YorkCity aftercollege andgotcompletely sucker-punched inthe faceby depression,Idid theonly thingI couldthink ofat thetime.I wrotethosesame kindsof lettersthat mymother hadwritten me forstrangers, and tuckedthem allthroughout thecity, dozensand dozensof them.I leftthem everywhere,in cafesand inlibraries,attheU.N.,everywhere.I bloggedabout thoselettersand thedays when they werenecessary, and Iposeda kindofcrazy promiseto the Internet:that ifyou askedmeforahand-written letter,I wouldwrite youone,no questionsasked.Overnight,my inboxmorphed intothis harborofheartbreak--a singlemother inSacramento,a girlbeingbullied inrural Kansas, all askingme,a22-year-old girlwhobarely evenknew herown coffeeorder,to writethem aloveletter andgive thema reasonto waitbythe mailbox.Well, today Ifuel aglobal organizationthat isfueledby thosetrips to themailbox, fueled bythe waysin whichwecan harnesssocial medialike neverbefore towrite andmailstrangers letterswhentheyneed themmost, but most ofall, fueled bycrates ofmail likethis one,my trustymailcrate, filled withthe scriptingsof ordinarypeople, strangers writingletters toother strangersnot becausetheyreever goingto meetand laughover acup ofcoffee, butbecause theyhave foundone anotherby wayof letter-writing.But,you know, the thingthat alwaysgets meabout theselettersis thatmostofthem havebeen writtenby peoplethathave neverknown themselvesloved ona pieceof paper.Theycould nottell youabout theink oftheir ownlove letters.Theyre the ones frommy generation, theonesof usthat havegrownup intoa worldwhere everythingis paperless, and wheresomeof ourbest conversationshave happenedupon ascreen. We havelearned todiary ourpain ontoFacebook, and wespeakswiftly in140characters orless. But whatif itsnot aboutefficiency thistime Iwas onthesubway yesterdaywith thismail crate, which isaconversation starter, let metell you.If youever needone, just carryone ofthese.Laughter Anda manjust staredatme, and hewas like,Well, why dontyou usetheInternetAndI thought,Well, sir,I amnot astrategist, nor amIspecialist.I ammerely astoryteller. And soI couldtellyou abouta womanwhose husbandhas justcome homefromAfghanistan, and she is havinga hardtime unearthingthisthing calledconversation, and soshe tuckslove lettersthroughoutthe houseasa way to say,Come backto me.Findme whenyou can.Or agirl whodecides thatsheis going toleavelove lettersaround hercampus inDubuque,Iowa, onlyto findher effortsripple-effected thenext daywhen shewalksout ontothe quadand findslove lettershanging fromthetrees, tucked inthe bushesand thebenches.Or themanwho decidesthat heisgoingto takehis life, uses Facebookasawaytosaygoodbye tofriends andfamily.Well, tonighthe sleepssafely witha stackof lettersjust likethis onetuckedbeneath hispillow, scripted bystrangers whowerethere forhim when. These arethe kindsof storiesthat convincedme thatletter-writing willnever againneed toflip backher hairandtalk aboutefficiency, because sheis an art formnow, all theparts ofher, the signing, the scripting, the mailing, the doodlesinthemargins. The merefact thatsomebody wouldevenjust sitdown, pull outa pieceof paperand thinkaboutsomeone thewhole waythrough, with anintention that is somuchharder tounearth whenthe browseris upand theiPhoneis pingingand wevegot sixconversations rollingin atonce, thatisanartform thatdoes notfall downtotheGoliathof getfaster,no matterhow manysocial networkswe mightjoin. We stillclutch closethese lettersto ourchest, tothe wordsthat speaklouder thanloud, when weturn pagesintopalettes tosay thethings thatwe haveneeded tosay, thewords thatwe haveneeded towrite,to sistersand brothersandeven tostrangers, for fartoo long.Thank you.ApplauseApplause【英语演讲稿给陌生人的情书】TED。
