《简爱》与《呼啸山庄》中女主人公性格对比研究A ComparativeStudy betweenthe HeroinesPersonalities inJaneEyre and Wuthering HeightsTableof Contents
106.Conclusion10by herbold pursuit of love, and ultimatelyachieved happiness. But Catherine wasgreedy formaterial thingsenjoyment leadsto tragic fate.Jane Eyrebrings usa charmof personalityindependence. In theface of two differentchoices, she persistedin herpursuit andeventually gotlucky.Catherine wastoo naiveto hideher feelings. There wasno scruplein front of herhusband toexpress her passionfor anotherman. The bodywants to live a rich life, but theheart reallywantsHeathcliff. The pursuit of love and theattachment tosocial realitytore her soul intwo halves.
4.Reasons for the differencesin thecharacters of the twoheroes
4.1Personality differencesbrought aboutby statusJane Eyre was an orphanfrom poverty, but she showed a strong rebellious spirit fromchildhood. The quietchild reactedto herinsults and astonishment toall thereaders:HI felta droportwo ofblood drippingfrom myhead andflowing downmy neck, still feelinga littleintense pain. This feelingoverwhelmed myfears fora moment, and Ifought himlike crazy...H At the beginning,Jane Eyrestood in front ofpeople as a rebel. Her rebellionwas sostrong thatno onewas weakerandno onewas strongerthan her.Catherine wasborn in the Earnshawfamily of Wuthering Heights, butshe wasnot asobedient asother nobleladies, but was as wildlyasa child. Her greatestpleasure wastospend awhole dayin the wilderness,to imaginea wonderfulparadise withHeathcliff, and toresistSindleys autocraticrule together. But it is assimple andkind asachildin theordinary family, nbecause onceshe reallymakes youcry, she seldomdoes notaccompany you to cry”.WhenHeathcliff wasshut upby Hindley,Catherine couldnot eat.HHer facewas redand tearsrolled downfromit. As achild,Catherine livedinaprimitive andclosed world. What wesaw was the primitivenatureof naturein her body.It wasa purewild beautywithout impurities. Her pure kindness, innocence, stubbornness andcourage, her rebellious spirit.
4.2Different attitudestowards loveJane Eyre demandsequality withmen, safeguarding herindependent personality and dignity, and expressing her lovefreely.Jane Eyrespersonality ismore vividwhen she andRochester talkabout marriage. She said to Rochesterrighteously:Do youthink thatbecause I ampoor, humble, ugly, short, there isno soulYou arewrong!I havesoul like you-also havea heart! Now I am not talking to you on the basis of everyfetus of the body, but my heart istalking to yoursoul, just fine.Like weveall passedaway,we stand before Godon an equal footing, because wereallequal. This is a voicefrom thedepths of the soul.It is a touching declaration of love and acomplete presentationof adistinct personality. But when she learnedthat Rochesterhad awife, sheleft himdecisively:Im nota bird;Im notcaught ina net;Im a free manof independent will;Imgoing to use myindependentwillto leaveyou now.Later, when St.John, who lovedGod morethanhuman beings, asked herto marryhim, she flatlyrefused. She wasnot obsessedwith gratitudeandsubmission. Finally, when Rochestefswife died, although Rochester was blind, she tooktheinitiative toexpressher love tohim. All theseshow Jane Eyres pursuitof women*s personalitydignity. She shouldnot onlymaintain herreputation, but alsomaintain herindependence. This ispreciselythe characteristicof thenew typeof women who wereawakening at that time.Catherine,on theone hand, pursues materialwealth,on the other hand, longs forspiritual lovewithHeathcliff, which sadlyalienates Catherinesthoughts and feelings. The contradictionof herpersonality is vividlyexpressed here. She cantpursue the love in her heartlike Jane Eyre.Theseparation of hersouland bodyhas decidedher tragicfate. She wanted to marryLinton andenjoyeverything thatthis marriagebrought, but atthe same time shewanted tohave Heathcliffemotionally.Catherine hasdescribed herdifferent feelingsof love for Linton and Heathcliff:one isthat she canenter theupper classand bringher admirablematerial enjoymentand sociallife;theother isthat in love, the twosides areunited and the lackof eitherside istantamount tospiritualdeath. She oncesaidto the housekeeperNelly,nI amHeathcliff, and he is alwaysin myheart-not asapleasure,as Icant alwaysbe my own pleasure, but becauseheismyownexistence.Whatevermaterial oursoul ismade of,heandI sharethe samematerial;and Linton, like sunlightandlightning, frost andfire,is quitedifferent from us.Leaving Heathcliff, that is,leaving her own soul,Catherine knowsthis verywell. She clappedher foreheadwith one hand and her chestwith theother. She saidto Nelly,In thedepths ofmy souland inmyheart,I knowclearly thatI amwrong.HTherefore,Catherine buriedher thrillinglove withHeathcliff aliveon thecondition that she wastotallyvoluntary andfully awarethatshewas wrongin choosingLinton.
4.3Differences inattitudestowardslifeJane Eyrelongs forand pursueshonest workand independenceon her own.A veryhighideological realm,so everythingabout thematerial world, are crawlingunder herfeet.Jane Eyreearnedher livingby workingat SandfieldHall on herownability. In frontof Rochester, she neverfeltinferior. On thecontrary, she thoughtthey wereequal.Because of her integrity, nobility andpurity,Rochesterwasshocked by Jane Eyre. She regardedher asa personwho couldtalk withherselfspiritually onanequal footing, and alsomade reallove betweenthem. Before marriage, whenshehad nofinancial resources, she did not wantRochester tospend moneyon herwedding, even jewelry, and onlyaccepted thedress.Jane issurrounded bysuch apowerful love force, andunder thetemptation of a beautiful and prosperouslife, she stillhas toadhere to her personaldignity, which isJane*s mostspiritual charm.Jane Eyre*slovestory aboutRochester stronglyreveals herviewof love. She scornedthe arroganceof dignitaries, laughed at their stupidity, and showedaself-reliant personality and goodideals. At theend of the novel,Jane Eyregets alegacy andreturnsto Rochester, who islonely andhelpless.Although thisplot isworth deliberating,it revealstheauthors ideal-women*s independence and equality in economy, social status, family andloyaltyto love.A kind ofCatherine,on theother hand, has notexperienced thehardships of life, isaccustomed to the aristocraticlife, longs forand pursuesarich and comfortablelife, but does notknow howto supportherself. So thestrong feelingsbetween herand Heathcliff,as Catherineherselfsaid,nMy feelingsfor Heathcliffare likeunderground rocks, unchanged. If Heathcliffdies, theworld willnot exist.”But evensuch strongfeelings cantmake herget ridof the pursuitofmaterialwealth, which isher wrongattitude towardslife, resulting in herlovetragedy andlife tragedy. In analienworld likeThrushcross Grange, all shefelt wasloss andemptiness. She hadimagined thatbymarrying Linton,a manof wealthand status, she wouldhelp Sheaget ridof Hendleysrule andmakehim anadult, but theresult washeartbreaking:Sheas departuretook awaythe sourceof herjoy;she lostherself away from thewilderness andWuthering Heights. In thereal world, the twosoulscant betogether,so onlydeath.
5.The endingof theirlove
5.1The endingof Jane Eyre loveJane Eyre andRochestefs Love is akindofspiritual resonance, regardless ofstatus, appearance, age, dignity, gain andloss of love, and donot careabout externalinterference anddifficulties,is the true senseof equallove.Without deeplove, how canyou beunwilling, resentful, tearful andhateful whenyou nevermarryIf youlovea person, you willnever careif hisbody isincomplete.Love is love. There isnoreason tosay it.If yousympathize withaperson, you livewith himall yourlife. This isirresponsiblefor yourfeelings anddisrespect foryourself andyour partner. If Iwere Jane Eyre,if Ihadonly sympathyfor Rochester. So I would ratherleave himthan makehim hateme orhumiliate himso much.In the world oflove, there willnever besympathy. There is a famouspassage inJane Eyrethat RochesterdeceivedJane Eyre into sayingthatshewas goingto marryMiss Ingram.Jane willleave RochesterandRochester willstay.Jane willsay to Rochester,nI tellyou I have togo!Do youthink Imgoing tostayandbesomeone whodoesnt mattertoyouYou thinkIm a machine-amachinewithoutfeelings Canyou toleratepeople takingbread frommy mouthand splashingthe wateroflifeout ofmycup AreI poor, humble, short andbeautiful, without soulandfeelingsNo,youre wrong! My soul is asrich asyou, and myheart is as fullasyou. If Godhad givenme somebeauty andwealth,Iwouldhave madeit ashard foryouto leave measit isfor metoleaveyou now.Iam nottalking toyouaccording tocustoms, rules,or evenfleshand blood, but mysoulistalking toyour soul,as ifwe wereequal toeach otherand bornequalthrough thegrave andstanding infrontofGod!Jane Eyreswords revealthetruemeaning of love.In lovebetween men and women,if onesideis humbledinfrontof theother because of itslow status, and losesits equalpersonality, suchlove willnot havegood results.Love is a balance.Men and women atboth endsof the balance mustmaintainspiritual equality.Otherwise, thebalanceoflovewill tiltand lovewill ceaseto exist.JaneEyre sequal attitudewon Rochestefsrespect andRochestefs love.
5.2The endingof CatherinesloveHeathcliff and Catherine arethe heroesand heroines of thewilderness novelWutheringHeights.Reading this novel, they havea wildand roughfeeling. The lovebetween Heathcliff andCatherine isproduced inthis desolatebackground. It isheroic, wild, romantic, lonely andtragic. The rootof thistragedy ismultifaceted, just likethe times. The turbulence, the distortionof values, the obstructionof familyforces, the defectof personality, betrayal betweenlovers andso on,allhave aprofound impacton thedevelopment ofthis love. The lovebetween Heathcliffand Catherineis not onlya socialtragedy, but alsoits owntragedy. Therefore, this lovetragedy isdoomed tohavecertain inevitability. Two protagonists, one isHeathcliff, whose soulis twisted. He reallyloses himselfin revenge, and hisheart isfilled withcruelty, which is almost abnormal. One isCatherine, who lostherselfdriven bymoney andlove. The lovetragedy inWuthering Heightsoriginates from theself-alienation of human natureand theserious distortionof thesociety in which secularhierarchyprevails.Catherines remarriageto EdgarLinton isno longerout ofher originalintention.Shebetrayed self”.Heathcliffs madrevenge, frustrated bylove, also violatesthe feelingsand ethicsofnormal people.Sincerity andkindness of human naturewere completelydestroyed anddistorted bythecapitalist societyat thattime, and theoriginal greatlove wasfinally destroyed. The lovetragedyin Wuthering Heights is not onlya socialtragedy, but alsotheir owntragedy. If thelove inJane Eyre is civilizedand simple, then thelove inWuthering Heights is wildandtangled.Wuthering Heightsisabarbaric anduncivilized world. It canbe saidthat Emilyslove forHeathcliffis crazy, even distorted. The toneof thewhole novel is basicallycold andmelancholy. The herohates for love andrevenges allhis so-called enemies.Heathcliffand Catherine loveeachother buttorture eachother. At theend of the novel, the heroends hislife inregret. The ending issad anddepressing.
6.ConclusionJane Eyre, forthelater developmentof femalespirit and after modernwomen hasa profoundinfluenceJane Eyrearoused alot ofwomen forthe traditionconcept ofthinking,to thepursuit ofindividualfreedom, equalityinlife, dont givein tolife andfate.Though she is humbleorigins, plain, but sheis self-esteem tothepursuitof freedom, stick tothe truth. On theone hand shefearlessly pursuesequality,on theother hand she alsobecause ofher plainand worshipof marriageand attachment tomen. From Catherine,we knowthat loveis theexchange oftwo hearts and souls.Loveisnotcontrolled byexternal factors. Her loveencourage usto pursuefreedom, equality, true lovebravely.Jane Eyreis anautobiographical novel, which illustratessuch atheme:human valuedignity二+love.Through theups anddowns of the orphangirfs lifeexperience, she successfullyportrays awomanwho isuneasy withthe statusquo, unwilling tobe humiliatedand daringto fight, reflectingthe sincerevoice andblame ofan ordinarysoul, and thedesire ofa lowercaseperson tobecome acapitalist. The noveltells usthat thebest lifeof humanbeings is theloveof humandignity.Theending of the novelis sucha lifeforthehostess.Although Ithink theendingis too perfect, and eventhisperfection itselfmarks superficiality,I stillrespect theauthors idealofa better life-that is,tolove dignity. After all,in today*s society, the realizationof theformula ofhuman value=dignity+love oftendepends on the helpof money.People seemmadly todrown lovefor moneyand status.Choose betweenrich andpoor, and betweenlove andhate.Few peoplelike Janewould abandoneverythingforlove and personality, and neverlook back.Jane Eyreshows usa simplification, areturn tosimplicity,a senseof devotion,a simplifiedfeeling thatdoes notcount forgains andlosses. It islike aglass ofice water, purifying thehearts ofevery reader, and atthe sametime arousingtheresonance ofreaders, especially femalereaders.Wuthering Heightsisa novel withrich symbolicmeanings. In termsof artistictechniques, itcombines realism, romanticism andsymbolism. On theonehand, through thetwists andturns ofvividstory plotsand typicalcharacter portrayal,it representsthe dailylife, love andmarriage oftheEnglish countrymanor, reflecting theexternal influence ofthemanor lifefar from the cityin thespecialhistorical backgroundofthe19th century. At the sametime, through aseries ofsymbolictechniques, the noveltwists andturns toexpress ahidden anti-family”tendency,such astheexclusion andclosure ofThrushcross Grangeand thechaos anddisorder ofWuthering Heights.Onthe otherhand, the noveluses alot ofsymbolic devices, the useof dreams, supernatural expressionandso on.In the novel, the descriptionof natureoccupies animportant position. The authorexpressesthe closerelationship betweenman andnature bydescribing thecharacters9personalitycharacteristics,the stormsin mansheart and the stormsin nature. The passionatedescription ofnaturein thenovelis full ofRomanticism, which conveysdistinct localcolor. The lonelyswampcanyon, the desolatemountain top, thewildernessdestroyed by the windand rain, the coldair andthehard landvividly conveythe breathtakingwildness uniquetothedesolate anddesolate. In thenovel, nature, asthehero and heroines refugefrom thepain broughtby family, contrasts sharplywiththe closedand oppressivespace offamily. It canbe saidthat theonly novelshe leftbehindshocked peoplesheartsandsouls.Jane Eyre andWuthering Heights arewritten bytwo parents and sisters. They areinfluencedby the same socialbackground andfamily background. They havesimilarities. Both ofthem havetheir own characteristics. They fullyreflect theresistance, freedom and equality ofthe peoplein thesocietyatthattime. However, becauseoftheir own experience and personality, their articlesarequite different.Bronte sistersare farfromus,Jane Eyre and Catherineare stillthere.Make thereaderdeeply impressed.Jane Eyre andCatherine have differentlove endings. But these two artisticfigures, like theirauthors Charlotteand Emily, are alive. The literaryhistory oftheworldis shiningandlasting.References

1.1The similaritiesand differencesoftheauthors characterTheheroinesofJaneEyreand EmilyBronte inCharlotte BrontesWutheringHeightshavedifferent socialstatus, different waysof pursuinglove anddifferent fates. However, they havethesame rebelliousspirit to their times, thesamesincerity andpersistence tolove, and thesameself-control consciousnesstotheirown destiny. The twonovels areconsistent inshowing thetruthof humannature, publicizing humannature, and thebeautifulandsincere lovebetweenmenandwomen, but thereare stillgreat differencesin descriptiveperformance.JaneEyre, the heroineofJane Eyre,is rebellious,free,equal,self-esteem andpure. As achild,JaneEyrefelt underthe hedgeofothers ather viciousaunts house, but shenever feltinferior. When shewas beatenby John, sheshouted toher powerfulcousin,“You boyis sovicious andcruel! You*re like a murderer-yourelike aslave owner-youre likethe emperorof Rome!“Jane Eyrespersonalityismore vividwhenshe andRochester talkabout marriage. When Loasked hernot toleave, she said,nI amafreemanwith independentwill.^And thesemixed withtheauthorsownexperience, hasbeenthe authorsownvery independentpersonality characteristics, for example,in herlife, she resolutelyrefused theproposaloftwovisitors, andadhered totheirloveconcept. In WutheringHeights, the protagonistCatherine hassimilarities withJaneEyre, but becauseofher superioraristocratic family, her personalityisfull of contradictionsbetween goodand evil.Onthe wayof choosinglove, her temporarygreed andvanity ledto tragedy.Later on,I realizedwhat Iwanted.Unlike JaneEyre, there wasa clearindependence atthe beginning.
2.Characters ofthetwoheroins
2.1Characters ofJane EyreTheheroine JaneEyreinJaneEyreis characterizedby strong, plain, independent, brave, rebellion andso on.These thematiccharacteristics arehighlighted inJane Eyreschildhood.Thesocial environmentinwhichshe grewup wasfull ofviolence.Atthebeginning ofthenovel,Jane Eyresrebellious imageis shown, andhercharacter issostrong. When JaneEyreandRochester talkedabout marriage, their charmof personalitycame intofullplay. She saidtoRochesterbluntly,nDo youthink becauseIampoor, humble, ugly andshort, there isno soulYoure wrong!Ihavea soullikeyou-andaheart too!Now Iamnottalkingtoyouon thebasisofevery humanfetus, but myheart isspeaking toyour heart,as ifwe hadall passedawayand stoodbefore Godonanequalfooting-because weare equalin nature. This isthe voicefromthe deepestheart, but alsoa verytouchingdeclarationoflove, fully reflectsher distinctpersonality. This reflectsJane Eyrespersonalityandmarital independence, desire forequalitybetween menandwomen.
2.2Characters ofCatherineCatherine, the heroineofthenovel, isnota traditionalVictorian beauty.Although sheisbeautiful andslim,sheisrebellious,self-willed,short-tempered andfree-spirited.As achild,Catherine waswild, stubborn andcourageous, full ofrebelliousspirit. When Rockwood,a tenantatThrushcross Grange, looked throughCatherines oldbooks,Catherine madeher firstappearance onthesidelines/I dontlike thisbook andthen snappedup thecover ofthe brokenbook andthrew itintothe kennel, cursing thatI hatedthe Bible/Catherine wasfullofstubbornness andrebellion. While girlsofherage wereplaying withdolls, she enjoyedriding horses. When wecondemned herinunison, sheshowedunprecedented joyandabold andcunning look, and respondtouswith thatsharpmouth, make funof Josephsreligious curseasajoke, make funof me,and pickon whathisfather hatesmost.Old Earnshawsindulgence furthercreated Catherinesself-willed andrebelliouspersonality. When Catherinewas wearingbeautiful clothes, she canhug ablack anddirty villain,But thisdoesnotmean thatCatherine hasno status. In dealingwith Dinnery, the housekeeperwhoplayed withher, she fullyshowed MissManors self-willed,arrogant andbrutal nature. The familysindulgenceandthenoble statusoftheinfluenceofthe environmentmake herstubborn andrebelliouscharacter particularlyprominent.
3.Character analysisofJaneEyreandCatherine
3.1Character differencesJaneEyreandCatherinehavedifferent socialstatus, different waysof pursuinglove anddifferentfates. However, they sharethesamerebelliousspiritin theirtimes, thesamesincerity andpersistenceinlove, andthesame self-control consciousnessof desirefor theirown destiny.JaneEyreis anindependent,strong,equality-seeking,not yieldingto secularpressure andaggressive woman.JaneEyreis independent, pursuing freedomandequality. She insistsonherownconcept ofloveandisnotinfluenced byexternal factors.Unlike JaneEyre, she knewwhat shewantedfromthebeginning, did notneed anyoneor anythingto improveherself, but achievedequalitythrough herown efforts, and JaneEyre pursuedindependenceandeconomic independencethatKatherine did not have, which wasalso animportant reasonforhertragicfate.
3.2Character similaritiesJaneEyre, the heroine, isastrong, simple, flexible, independent andaggressivewoman.Shewas ofhumble originand plainappearance, but shedid notfeel inferiorto herself. She scornedthearrogance ofthe dignitaries, laughed attheir stupidity, and showeda self-reliant personalityand abeautifulideal. She hasa tenaciousvitality, never bowtofate, and finallyhas thegood lifeshe longsfor.JaneEyrelives inan environmentwhere bothher parents are deadandherparentsarestrangers.Since childhood, theyhavebeen treateddifferently fromtheir peers:dislike fromtheir aunts, contempt fromtheir cousins, insults andbeatings fromtheir cousins. But shedidnotdespair, shedid notdestroy herself, andshedidnotsink intohumiliation. All theunfortunate thingsbroughtabout byJaneEyre, onthecontrary, are replacedbyJaneEyres infiniteconfidence, but JaneEyresindomitable spirit,an invincibleinner strengthof personality. She hasa rationalunderstanding ofherown thoughtsandpersonality, andafirm pursuitofherhappiness andemotions. From JaneEyre, the expressionofthenew women*s image:self-esteem,self-respect,self-reliance,self-improvement,for theirown personality, emotion, life judgment, choice offirm idealsandpersistent pursuit. In Catherineslife, themostintense pursuitislove. The pursuitofloveruns throughherlife. The loveshe pursuesis dividedinto twokinds, one isdue tohumannature, theotheristosatisfy hervanity. The formeris manifestedin herpursuitofloveforher fatherand Heathcliff, which isanon-utilitarian loveandanatural approach. The latteris reflectedinherloveforEdgar,Linton andothers, which ispurposeful.Catherinewastoo naughtyand unpleasantinherchildhood, but shealsowantedtobe lovedby herparentsandothers. It washumannature. This lackof loveenvironmentfurther stimulatedher wildpersonalityandformed herdomineering personality, which isthe preludetoherpsychological abnormality. The inevitablemanifestation ofpsychologicalabnormality:behavioral abnormality.Catherines firstfull-scale outbreakofmetamorphosis wasdue toHeathcliffs departure, andshesat inthe livingroom overnightintherainin extremedespair. The nextday, her bodyfever andpsychological traumaconfused hermind. When Nellywalked intoher room, her terribleappearance frightenedNelly intothinking shewasgoing mad.The mostpowerful outbreakof Catherinesmetamorphosis wasEdgars insistencethatshe makea choicebetween himand Heathcliff. It wasthis outbreakthat completelydefeatedCatherine.Three daysof unremittingspiritual torturemade Catherinemore confusedand wild.Hersoul brokeawayfromherbodyand driftedintheillusory world. The spiritualmadness madeherunable tocontrol hertongue andbrain. She spokelikeadream crazilyand madeunusual actionscrazily. This time,Catherine completelyemptied herself, and finallymadness ledtothefinaldestruction.JaneEyreandCatherineare endowedwith twodistinct destiniesbytheauthor.JaneEyre。
