世纪杯全国大学生英语演讲稿21（96年21世纪杯全国大学生英语演讲比赛”二等奖获得者，北京外国语大学徐义成）Facing thisaudience onthe stage,I havethe excitingfeeling of participatingin themarch ofhistory,for whatwe arefacingtoday ismore thana merepetition orcontest.It isanassembly ofsome ofChinas mosttalented andmotivated people,representatives of a youngergeneration thatare preparingthemselvesfor theingofa newcentury.r mgrateful that Ive beengiven thisopportunity,atsuch ahistoric moment,to standhere asa spokesmanof mygeneration and totake aserious lookback at the past15years,a crucialperiod for every oneof usand forthis nation as well.Though it is onlywithin my power totell aboutmypersonal experience,and onlya tinyfragment ofit at that,itstill represents,I believe,the rootofaspirit which has beenessentialto me and toall thepeople bredby thepast15years.In myelementary years,there wasa little girl in theclass whoworked veryhard butsomehow couldnever dosatisfactorilyin herlessons.The teacherasked meto helpher,and itwas obviousthatshe expecteda lotfrom me.but asa youngboy,restless,thoughtless,I alwaystried to evade herso asto getmore timetoenjoy myself.One daybefore thefinal exam,she cameup tome andsaid,“Could youplease explain this tome Iwant verymuch todo betterthistime.〃I startedexplaining,and finishedin ahurry.Pretending notto noticeher stillconfused eyes,I ranoff quickly.Nat surprisingly,she again did verybadly inthe exam.And twomonthslater,atthebeginning of the newsemester,word cameofher deathof bloodcancer.No oneever knewabout thelittle taskIfailed to fulfill,but Icouldnt forgivemyself.I simplycouldntforget hereyes,which seemto beasking,“Why didntyoudo a little moreto helpme,when itwas soeasy foryou Whydidntyou understand alittlebetter thetrust placedin you,so that I wouldnot haveto leavethis worldin suchpain andregret”I wasabout eightor nineyears oldatthattime,but inaway itwas the very startingpoint of my life,for I began tounderstandthe word〃responsibility〃and tolearn toalways domyduties faithfullyand devotedly,for theimplications ofthatsacred wordhas dawnedon me:the mutualneed andtrust of people,the cooperationand interreliancewhich aretheveryfoundationof humansociety.Later in my life,I continuedto experiencemany failures.But neveragaindidI feelthat regretwhich struckme atthe deathof the girl,for itmakes myheart satisfiedto thinkthatIhavealways doneeverything inmypowertofulfillmy responsibilitiesasbest I can.As Igrew up,changed andimproved bythis incidentandmany othersimilar ones,Ibeganto perceivethe changestakingplace aroundmeandto findthat society,in away,was initsformative yearslike myself.New buildings,new moditiesand newfashionsappear everyday.New ideas,new information,new technologies.People cantalk witheach otherfrom anycorner ofthe earthina matterof seconds.Society isbeing morepetitive.Words likeindividuality andcreativity aregetting moreemphasisand morepeople arerewarded for their hardwork andefforts.Such is the erain whichthis generation,grows andmatures.Such isthe erain whichthis generationwill takeoverthe nationfrom ourfathers andlearn torun it.Yet inthe meantime,many problemsstill exist.We learnthat crimestake placein broaddaylight withcrowdsofpeoplelooking onand notassisting.We hearthat therearestill about1million childreninthiscountry whocant evenaffordto goto elementaryschools whileenormous sumsof moneyarebeing squanderedaway ondinner partiesand luxurycars.We buyshoddy medicines,or merelyworthless junkin thenameof medicines,that aggravate,rather thanalleviate ourdiseasessince money,many peoplebelieve,isthemost importantthinginthe world thatmust bemade,even atthe expenseofmorality andresponsibility.Such anera,therefore,determines that we are ageneration with a keenersense ofpetition andefficiency andagreater readinessto thinkcritically andact creatively.Such anera,furthermore,demands,thatweareagenerationwithaclear perceptionof ourhistoricalresponsibility andan aggressivewill totake actionand solvetheproblems.History haslong beenpreparing thesequalities inthis generationanditisnow callingus forwardto givetestimonyto ourpatriotism andheroism towardsthis nationand allhumanity.Standing herenow,I thinkofthepast15years of my lifeasan ordinarystudent.Probably I11be anordinary manfor therestofmylife.But thisdoesnt discourageme any,for Iknowthat withmy senseof responsibilityand devotedefforts toalwaysstrive,forthebest,its goingto bea meaningfuland worthwhilelifethatIwill beliving.Standing herenow,I thinkofthepast15years ofthisnation,whichhasachieved greatnessthat inspiredmillions ofpeopleofmyage,most of whom willnot attainfame orprestigeand onlya fewofwhomwill beremembered byposterity.But thatdoesn，t discourageus any,because weknow thatthe worldwatches,the worldlistens,theworldis waitingto seewhere thisnationwill beheading ina timeof richopportunities andfiercepetition.Icant everforget thatlittlegirlinmyclass whocouldnthad thesame opportunitiesas anyof ushere toenjoya wonderfullife todayandahopeful worldtomorrow.It isthe sacredresponsibility ofthisgenerationtoface upto thechallenges ofthe newcentury andto devoteoursweat andblood,our wisdomand passion,to thehistoric causeofmaking thisnationagreater andhappier landforeveryoneof us.We arenot goingtoevadethat responsibility.We aregoingto letpeople down.And people,far andnear,will hearofus.Frost willbe broughtto theirbackbones andtears totheireyes whenour storiesare toldand retold,So letus goforth,my fellowmembers ofthis luckilychosen generation,and meetthenew
