演讲稿:毕业演讲稿Student SpeechDelivered attheWashington UniversityEngineeringGraduate StudentRecognitionCeremony15May1997Lorrie FaithCranorFaculty, family, friends, and fellowgraduates, goodevening.I amhonored toaddress youtonight. On behalfof thegraduatingmasters and doctoral studentsof WashingtonUniversitysSchool ofEngineering andApplied Science,I wouldlike to thankall theparents, spouses, families, and friends whoencouraged andsupported usas weworked towardsour graduatedegrees.I wouldespecially like to thankmy ownfamily, eightmembers ofwhich arein theaudience today.I wouldalso liketothank allof thedepartment secretariesand otherengineeringschool staffmembers whoalways seemedto bethere whenconfusedgraduate studentsneeded help. And finallyI would liketothankthe WashingtonUniversity faculty members whoserved asourinstructors, mentors, and friends. As Ithink backon thesevenandahalf yearsI spentatWashington University,my mindis filledwith memories, happy, sad, frustrating, and evenhumorous.Tonight I wouldliketo sharewith yousome of thememories that I take with meas Ileave WashingtonUniversity.I takewith me the memory of myoffice onthe fourthfloorof LopataHall theroom atthe endof thehallway thatwas toohotin summer, too coldin winter, and alwaystoo faraway fromthewomens restroom. The windowwas myoffices bestfeature. Were itnot forthe physics building acrossthe way,it wouldhaveafforded mea clearview of the arch. But insteadI gota viewof the roofof thephysicsbuilding.I alsohad aview ofone cornerof the roofof UrbauerHall, which seemedto bea favoriteperchfor variousspecies ofbirds whoalternately wonperching rightsforseveral weeksat atime. And Ihad anice viewof thephysicscourtyard, noteworthy asa goodplace forwatching peopleruntheir dogs. Its amazinghow fascinatingthese viewsbecame thelongerI workedon mydissertation. But myfavorite viewwas ofanearby oaktree. From myfourthfloor vantagepoint Ihad aratherintimate viewofthetree andthe variousbirds andsquirrels thatinhabitit.Occasionally abird wouldland onmy windowsill, whichusually hadthe effectof startlingboth ofus.I takewith methe memoryof twoyoung professorswhopassed awaywhile Iwas agraduate student.Anne Johnstone, theonly femaleprofessor fromwhom Itook acourse in the engineeringschool, and BobDurr,a politicalscience professorand amemberof mydissertation mittee, both lostbrave battleswith cancer.I remember them fondly.I takewith methe memoryof failingthe firstexam inoneofthefirst engineeringcourses Itook asan undergraduate.I rememberthinking thecourse wasjust toohard forme andthatI wouldnever beable topass it.So Iwent totalk to the professor, ready todrop theclass. And hetold menot togive up,he toldmeI couldsucceed inhis class. For reasonsthat seemedpletelyludicrous atthe time,he saidhe hadfaith in me.And afterthatmy grades in theclass slowlyimproved, and Iended thesemesterwith anA onthe finalexam.I rememberhow motivationalit wastoknow thatsomeone believedinme.I takewith mememories ofthe midwesternfriendlinessthat sosurprised mewhen Iarrived inSt.Louis8years ago.Sincemoving toNew Jersey,I amsad tosay, nobody hasasked mewhereI wentto highschool.I takewith methe memoryoftheshortlived putersciencegraduate studentsocial mitteelunches. The ideawas thatgroupsof CS grad studentswere supposedto taketurns cookinga monthlylunch. But afterone gradstudent prepareda potof chickenthatpoisoned almostthe entireCSgradstudent populationand oneunluckyfacultymemberin onefell swoop, there wasntmuchenthusiasm forhaving morelunches.I takewith methe memoryof amore successfulgraduatestudent effort, the establishmentof theAssociationof GraduateEngineering Students, known asAGES.Started bya handfulof engineeringgraduate studentsbecause weneededa wayto electrepresentatives toa campuswidegraduatestudent government,AGES soongrew intoan organization that nowsponsorsa widevariety of activities andhas beeninstrumentalin addressinga numberof engineeringgraduate studentconcerns.I takewith methe memoryof anEngineering andPolicydepartment thatonce hadflourishing programsfor fulltimeundergraduate, masters, anddoctoral students.I takewith mememories ofthe1992U.S.Presidentialdebate.Eager to get involvedin allthe excitementI volunteeredtohelp whereverneeded.I rememberspending severaldays inthemakeshift debateHQ givingoutoftown reportersdirections totheathletic plex.I rememberbeing thrilledtogetassigned thejobof collectingfilm fromthe photographersinthe debate hallduringthe debate. And I rememberthedisappointment ofdrawingthe shorteststraw amongthe studentvolunteers andbeing theonewho hadto takethe filmout ofthedebate hall anddown tothedark roomfive minutesinto thedebate withno chanceto reenterthedebatehallafter Ileft.I takewith mememories ofuniversity holidayswhichnever seemedto applyto graduatestudents.Irememberspendingmany afall breakand PresidentsDay holidaywith myfellow gradstudentsin allday meetingsbrought tous bythe putersciencedepartment.I takewith mememories ofexams thatseemed designedmoreto testendurance andperseverance thanmastery ofthe subjectmatter.I managedto escapetaking anyclasses thatfeaturedinfamous24hourtakehome exams, but rememberthe sufferingof mylessfortunate colleagues. And whatdoctoralstudentcould forgetthepain andsuffering onemust endureto survivethe qualifyingexamsI takewith methe memoryofthe sevenminuterule, whichalways seemedto bean acceptableexcuse forbeing tenminuteslate foranything oncampus, but whichdoesnt seemto applyanywhereelse Igo.I takewith methememoryof Fridayafternoon ACMhappyhours, known notfor kegsof beer, but ratherbowls ofrainbowsherbet punch.Over theseveral yearsthatIattended thesehappyhours theyenjoyed varyingdegrees ofpopularity, oftenproportional tothe qualityand quantityoftheacpanyingrefreshments butthere wasalways therainbow sherbertpunch.Itakewithmememories ofpurple parkingpermits, theWest Campusshuttle, checking mypendaflex, overdue librarybooks, trying toprint fromcec, lunches onDelmar, friendswhosleptin theiroffices, miniature golfin LopataHall,The GreenwayTalk, division IIIbasketball, and tryingto convinceDean Russelthatyet anotherengineering schoolrule shouldbe changed. Finally,Iwouldliketoconclude, not witha memory, butwith someadvice. What woulda graduationspeech bewithout alittleadvice, right Anyway, this adviceesinthe formofaversedelivered tothe1977graduating classof LakeForest CollegebyTheodore SeussGeisei, better knowntotheworld asDr.SeussHeres howit goes:My
