(一)I amhappy tojoin withyou todayin whatwill godown inhistoryas thegreatest demonstrationfor freedominthehistoryof our nation.Five scoreyears ago,a greatAmerican,in whosesymbolicshadow westand today, signed theEmancipationProclamation. This momentousdecree cameasagreat beaconlightof hopeto millionsof Negroslaves whohad beensearedintheflames ofwithering injustice. It cameas ajoyousdaybreak toend thelong nightof theircaptivity. But onehundred years later, the Negrostill isnot free. One hundredyears later, the lifeofthe Negro isstill sadlycrippledby themanacles ofsegregation and the chainsofdiscrimination. One hundredyears later, the Negrolives onalonely islandof povertyinthemidst ofa vastocean ofmaterialprosperity. One hundredyearslater, the Negrois stilllanguishedinthecorners ofAmerican societyand findshimselfan exilein hisown land. And sowe vecome heretoday todramatizea shamefulcondition. In asense wevecometoournation scapital to cash acheck. When thearchitects ofour republicwrote themagnificentwords ofthe ConstitutionandtheDeclaration ofIndependence, they weresigning apromissory noteto whichevery Americanwasto fallheir. This notewas apromise thatall men, yes, blackmen aswell aswhite men, wouldbeguaranteed thea unalienableRightsof Life,Liberty andthe pursuitof Happiness.Itis obvious today thatAmerica hasdefaulted onthis promissorynote, insofar asher citizensof colorare concerned.Insteadof honoringthis sacredobligation,America hasgiven the Negropeople abad check,a checkwhich hascome backmarkedinsufficient funds.”But werefuse to believethatthe bankof justiceisbankrupt. We refusetobelievethat thereare insufficientfundsin thegreat vaultsof opportunityof thisnation. And so,weve cometocashthis check,a checkthat willgive usupon demandtheriches offreedom andthe securityof justice. We havealso cometo thishallowed spotto remindAmericaof thefierce urgencyof Now.This isno time to engagein theluxuryof coolingoff orto takethe tranquilizingdrug ofgradualism. Now isthe timetomakereal thepromises ofdemocracy. Now isthe timeto risefromthedark anddesolatevalley ofsegregation tothe sunlitpath ofracial justice.Nowis the timetolift ournation fromthe quicksandsof racialinjusticetothesolid rockof brotherhood. Now isthetimetomake justicea realityfor allof Gods children. It wouldbe fatalfor thenation tooverlook theurgencyof themoment. This swelteringsummer oftheNegroslegitimate discontent willnotpauntil thereis aninvigoratingautumn offreedom andequality.Nineteensixty-three isnot anend, but abeginning. And thosewhohope thattheNegroneeded toblow offsteam andwill nowbecontentwillhavearude awakeningifthenation returnstobusineas usual. And therewillbeneither restnortranquility inAmerica until theNegrois grantedhiscitizenship rights. The whirlwindsof revoltwill continuetoshake thefoundations ofournationuntilthebright dayofjustice emerges. But thereis somethingthatImust saytomypeople, whostand onthe warmthreshold whichleads intothe palaceofjusticeIn theproceof gainingour rightfulplace,we mustnotbe guiltyof wrongfuldeeds.Let usnot seekto satisfyourthirst forfreedom bydrinking fromthe cupof bitterneandhatred. We mustforever conductour struggleonthehigh planeofdignity anddiscipline. We mustnot allowour creativeprotestto degenerateinto physicalviolence.Again andagain,we mustrise tothe majesticheights ofmeeting physicalforcewith soulforce. The marvelousnew militancywhich hasengulfed theNegrocommunity mustnot leadustoa distrustof all。
